Some, in particular, are the products that we use to get clean. This includes body washes, facial cleansers, and soaps are doing us more harm than good. Eating is one of the main ways that the body acquires nutrients, and the other way is transdermal which is through the skin. Your skin is your largest organ spanning 22 feet on average, and 60 percent of substances you put on it are eventually absorbed into the bloodstream. This semipermeable membrane allows us to absorb vitamins and minerals, but unfortunately, it absorbs harmful chemicals we put on it, too.
Chemicals are common in soaps and they are no joking matter. They can disrupt our hormones, lead to reproductive issues, promote allergies, and increase the risk of some cancers. With serious side effects like these, we need to be very particular about what we put on our skin.
Here are four chemicals you should watch out for when buying soap:
FRAGRANCE: Fragrance could be a cocktail of chemicals, and you would never know it. You see the FDA does not require companies to disclose the breakdown of the ingredients because the chemicals they use are considered trade secrets. Most of the time, synthetic chemicals, and cancer-causing toxins, like phthalates, used to make fragrances last longer, are hiding under that one sneaky term. Constant exposure to fragrances has been shown to negatively impact the central nervous system and can trigger allergies, migraines, and asthma symptoms.
PARABENS: The ingredients are estrogen mimickers so when applied to the skin and enter the bloodstream the body mistakes them for estrogen. Excessive amounts of estrogen make the body react in many ways. The result is decreasing muscle mass, increasing fat deposits, causing early onset of puberty, and spurring reproductive difficulties in both men and women.
SULFATES: These chemicals are routinely used to produce lather and bubbles in the soap. Common sulfates used are SLS, sodium lauryl sulfate, and SLES, sodium Laureth sulfate. Sulfates strip the skin of its natural oils and increase the penetration of the skin. They also irritate people with sensitive skin or eczema.
TRICLOSAN: This chemical is mostly used in antibacterial soap. It creates dioxin, a carcinogen that has been found in breast milk. Dioxins have a disruptive effect on the endocrine system which negatively affects the thyroid functions. Get this Dioxin is a primary toxic component of Agent Orange.
